She Veterans Summit

The She Veterans Summit – Denali 2018 team is comprised of a diverse group of women representing the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force. In May 2018, this group will attempt the first all-female, military veteran summit of Denali, the highest mountain in North America. Their objectives are to honor, inspire, and empower women veterans in partnership with their fiscal sponsor, the American Women Veterans Foundation.

The goal of this expedition is multi-fold:

● Establish and expand the public’s image of women veterans, creating space within our communities to acknowledge and engage these women as resources and role models.

● Promote the power of the outdoors in rehabilitation, even in the most rugged terrain America has to offer, thereby encouraging more women to take advantage of expeditionary opportunities.

● Foster awareness for the importance of protecting these natural resources and landscapes that humble and inspire the human spirit while supporting life as we know it.

● Empower participants with nationally recognized training to include Wilderness First Responder certification, preparing them to seek professional guiding employment opportunities, forging the path for women veteran lead wilderness programming.

These combat veterans continue to serve their communities after their military commitments. They are inspired to not only break trail in an uphill battle on the tallest North American mountain, but also in the minds of Americans. These women are resilient. They have survived multiple deployments, suicide bombers, military sexual assaults, helicopter crashes, traumatic brain injuries, post-traumatic stress, suicidal ideation and attempts, and even an above the knee amputation. This team is electing to suffer together on a frigid mountainside because they’re living testaments to the power of the incredible growth that can stem from traumatic experiences.

Denali, often called the toughest ascent due to the frigid temperatures and cold weather, rises 20,310 feet above sea level. Mountain climbing can be brutal. They will face a cold, month-long physical beating with the kind of views only a small number of individuals have ever experienced. They will carry a 60-lbs pack while dragging a sled with 40-50 lbs. of equipment for 6-8 hours a day for weeks.

She Veterans Summit believes that these women are powerful because of what they’ve been through, not despite it. This program is a platform for demonstrating the power of Military Sisterhood. Their objective is not only to provide expeditionary opportunities but also education. Team members will leave Denali with the credentials required to start a professional guide career, multiplying the impact of every dollar donated, as well as the availability of future women veterans expeditions. Donated funds are housed by our fiscal sponsor, the American Women Veterans Foundation (a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization), and will help pay for the April 2017 Wilderness First Responder Training at Denali Basecamp, flights to and from Alaska, un-sponsored gear, and of course the May 2018 expedition cost.

Every dollar donated will be invested in this expedition. The Team is so thankful for your support and promises to give updates with amazing images, blog posts, and videos of the struggles and the successes!
