Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz has become the first woman to lead the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the first to head any of the military services’ academies.

Stosz was installed today as 40th superintendent of the New London, Conn., campus, replacing Rear Adm. J. Scott Burhoe, who led the school since 2007.

The native of Takoma Park, Md., graduated from the academy in 1982, the third class to include women.

“We’ve come a long way and I’m proud to be a role model,” Stosz told the Associated Press on Thursday. “But this really is part of a natural progression.”
